My mechanic told me Yamaha switched to 'hardened' gearsets in the Max at
some point in time after the 85/86 model run. I've got an '85 that chewed
up 4th & 5th when it popped out of 4th during a race. That shift fork was
also bent.
As a result, I had him replace my entire gearset with the newer, supposedly
better set, back in '93 (I think). No problems since then despite lots more
racing and burnouts!
So, to answer your question more directly based on my experience, ALL gears
are a weak link in the drive train.... I agree with you not wanting to have
that rear wheel lock up!
Whining gears are usually due to the surfaces not mating correctly, like
when they get worn out, or wear unevenly. That's bad an any machine, but
could be deadly on the Max.
Good Luck figuring that one out,
Chris Chaja
