Shawn,
I had to put the 2nd/5th gear set in my 85. Also
found bent shift fork and worn shift drum.
However this may not be your problem!
Usually when the second gear problem begins, your
max will slip or jump, while under hard
accelaration through 2nd gear as the dogs on the
gear slips out than catches again.
