I'd suspect your friend is mistaken. Unless you take VERY careful
notes on mileage, it's easy to draw incorrect conclusions.

RPM has little bearing on mpg. Wind drag does. I hear you saying
"Hey, if I'm going faster, my RPM is up. So are you full of it,
Kelly?" No, I'm not. With all the studying I've done on mpg,
I've found that you can be revving very high all day riding twisties
(at a slower than freeway average speed) and get better mileage
than when you're going faster with lower RPMS on the freeway.

This is because the effect of wind drag is exponential compared to
a linear speed increase. You'll find that from 0 mph to some speed
wind doesn't affect mileage much. But past that certain speed the
effects of wind drag really start to affect mileage, and it only gets
worse the faster you go.

We all know the aerodynamics of the Vmax are horrible. (but we
don't care, because we love the bike for other reasons) So unless
you spend all your time smoothly cruising at low speeds, expect
your mileage to be much lower than a bike with a decent fairing.
