Ken,
There should only be two washers maximum in your needle pile up ...
The .020 .. if you choose to have one, (on either side of the c-clip
for shimming purposes), and the larger diameter washer that the spring
pushes on, (this is a factory washer and if you say it is .020 too
then I suspect it is). If you put anymore in there, (or a thicker
combination), you are going to restrict/jam the movement of the needle
assembly, (needle, needle collar,c-clip, .020 washer and large
diameter flat washer), against the spring, (as you have already
noticed with your thick washer). You can do that ... but you will need
to shim the screw cap an equal amount.

The purpose of the spring tension is to keep the needle in position
and pushed against the end of the slide. When you align the small tip
on the on the needle collar with the small hole at the end of the
slide you actually bias the direction of the needle protruding from
the slide, (as the collar is not exactly flat). This bias is supposed
to help keep the weight of the slide off of the slide bore, (using the
needle and needle bore as a bearing surface) .... and allowing some of
that weight to ride in the needle bore. If the needles were absolutely
rigid there would be no way to make up for slight mis-alignment and
the slides would easily jam in their bores. This free movement against
the spring allows the needle to move easily in and out of the needle
bore without creating a lot of friction, (especially when you start
getting some air pushing on the top of that slide).

You are going to have to dump the thicker washer as it is responsible
for the loss of movement against the spring. Put real .020 washers,
(or smaller in for needle shimming), and dump the other ... and leave
the factory washer at the end of the pile up where it belongs. If you
want some official Dynojet .020 washers ... send me you address
offline and I will send you four ....... since I temporarily seem to
have a bunch ... (as long as you live in this hemisphere).
