Mike,
I am not sure ... reading your post ... if you are trying to repair a
problem or if you are trying to improve performance. All "Dial-a-Jet"
does is move the main jet functionality out of the fuel bowl ... I
suppose it would be of some value if you were "testing" at a 1/4 mile
race track or something to determine what the best setting would be
for main jetting etc ... as it would eliminate you having to pull the
fuel bowls to change a main jet. Or if you lived like John Furbur in
the lowest altitude ground hog complex in metropolitan Denver at
52-5300 feet and in the same afternoon decided to ride up to Loveland
Pass or such where I believe it is something like 12,000 feet. In the
case of the Virago however ... main jets can easily be changed without
removing the carbs or their fuel bowls, (just pull the plug out at the
bottom of the fuel bowls and unscrew them ... even if you drop them
they will fall out of the bottom of the fuel bowl). If you want to
make "your" jets bigger ... a stock XV1000 has a Mikuni 124 in
cylinder 1 and a 132 in cylinder 2 ... go up from there ... You can
order individual jets from a lot of places or you can get a stage 1
kit from Dynojet. I seriously doubt that you need to do this though
... you might just try putting an .020 shim under the needles on your
two carbs and backing out the pilot mixture screws about a 1/2 turn
over what they were set from the factory, (that will stop that pesky
backfire too). I don't think you want to get into individual air
filters ... and both of your carbs draw air through an enclosed cavity
in the gas tank anyhow to keep it nice and cool ... so "go with it" as
it works pretty good.
