Terry,
I didn't check them twice ... only once and it was at 1315 miles ...
(it looks like I did the 600 mi service at 509 miles). I have everyone
marked "conformance" here .. but I do remember that both intakes on
the right front, (#4), were the tightest and barely passed the .004
feeler shim. I also remember what a royal pain it was and having to
buy some extra 1/4 inch extensions to get the torque wrench on the
rear cover bolts ... I was worried about warping the covers by hand
tightening. I had no problem with the gaskets ... they were fine and
peeled right off ... (are still fine today). I also remember the
virtually non-existent timing marks on the flywheel ... and ended up
simply turning the crank to position the lobes ...

I did my Royal Star about two months ago ... and found no borderlines
either ... (except they have tighter exhaust specs than the Vmax) ...
and of course there is a lot more room to work ....

Soooooooo .. even though both of these bikes "checked" OK ... I am
glad I did it ... If I ever had a problem or noticed a cylinder fading
from the pack on compression readings etc .. It would have made me
crazy thinking that I might have left a cylinder out of spec and that
it was the cause of the problem ... It wouldn't have helped me for
someone else to have done this, (this is something I absolutely
positively have to see for myself) ... and after all the stuff I had
to take off of the bike to create decent working room to get at these
guys I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to do that either ... I also
have visions of someone simply reaching in with a hex wrench and
cranking down on these valve cover bolts ...

I suspect that unless someone had a poorly tempered lobe, (which would
show within a few hundred miles), decided to omit changing their oil
filter etc .. that it would be unlikely to find on a followup check
that these clearances have changed at all, (IMHO). I always thought
that if I could come across a reasonable selection of discs .. that I
would like to go back in and set them all at the minimum specification
... but neither the motivation or the discs have come my way yet.

Knowing what I have found on two of these bikes ... I think I would
want to do this myself or not do it at all ... I remember when I took
delivery on the Royal, (about six months ago). The salesman and the
service manager both shake your hand and spend about 10 minuets
telling you why you should come back to them for maintenance and the
600 mile checkup ... During that conversation I remember saying ... oh
yea ... and you guys change the rear end oil too ... right ?? ... They
both told me that changing the rear end oil was not really necessary
or part of "their" maintenance plan ... but that they would check the
level if a "LEAK" was detected !! I spent 10 minuets explaining to
them why the "first" oil change in the differential was the most
important one of it's whole life and showed them in the owner's manual
where it was a 600 mile maintenance item .... They both said "wow" and
the salesman told my wife ... gee ... your husband knows alot about
motorcycles ... Now would you really want this place, (a really large
dealership in Phoenix), to check you valve clearance ?? (venting
complete) .....
