Thomas,
I think that is "Gary" with the 157.5s on the 1500 . .. not me ...

Putting the "Y" back on does create additional resistance and will
create a greater pressure differential, (between open air and the
throttle plates), so yes .. of course that is why it behaved better,
(indicating that you are still lean without it).

The PAJ1, (yes .. California carbs have a 100 in there), and the PAJ2
both contribute air to mix with the fuel from the pilot fuel jet. The
air contributed by the PAJ2 travels through the coasting enrichment
valve .... and when you decelerate the valve slams shut and blocks the
air flow. This action obviously enrichens the pilot mixture, (because
you are now only getting air from the PAJ1), and this is done to
prevent backfires, (remember the crap about fuel in the exhaust pipe
... the crayon etc ... ). Well .. if you didn't richen this mixture
... it would be able to achieve an ignitable mixture in the middle of
the pipe and POW ... you know the story ... (that is why an air leak
in the exhaust causes backfires as well). Sooooooo .. yes of course
.... you can change the PAJ1 to a 90 ... If you don't you have to keep
in mind that you are already passing more "air" to the mixture before
even attempting to alter your air jet combination. IMHO ... it would
be an excellent idea to do this ... especially if you are in the
process of adjusting your pilots to make them richer anyhow.

Yes .. you should have on problem running without a "Y" if you get the
pilots closer to where they really need to be, (richer), and you have
adjustable slide needles. I got my pilot fuel jets from HLSM ... and
most people got them a lot cheaper at Sudco. The pilot air jets of
course are the same shape as the mains ......
