Dennis,
"do you just pay your money and take you chances ?" ... Yes ... Most
jet kits at least consist of slide needles and some main jets. The
biggest benefit is that you almost always get "adjustable" needles.
Stock needles, (unless someone turns grooves on them), can only be
made richer via a shim. Many people are more than happy with the
results they have obtained by putting a shim, (an .020 washer
usually), underneath a stock slide needle. In some cases they have
benefited by increasing or decreasing the size of the main fuel jet
which will usually cost you $2.00 to $2.50 USD, (per carb), depending
on the brand.

While the cost of jet kits seem out of line with the materials you
receive you are also paying for the research incurred by the
manufacturer to include parts that will be sized properly for your
application, (the benefit and accuracy of this "research" is always
suspect and unless they state otherwise they are assuming their kits
will be installed on stock bikes with stock airboxes). Depending on
your "goal" you may be satisfied with almost any of the jet kits that
are sold for the Vmax. The real "goal" should of course be to "add"
adjustability to the carbs ...

If you are not yet a CV hound ... I would suggest getting a kit the
first time around. The instructions and experience provided by a
"packaged" kit is always worth the money and the worse thing that will
happen is that you may turn up a little rich. Anyone feeling more
comfortable doing their own thing can then make additional adjustments
by purchasing individual components that are more suitable for their
specific configuration.

I personally prefer the Dynojet kits because the Vmax packages include
some "light tension" springs that are pretty useful when attempting to
tune a non-standard air intake configuration. A lot of people address
this issue by shortening or "tying" back stock springs ... So
obviously there are a lot of ways to accomplish the same thing ... The
DJ kits usually contain 3-4 sets of jets as well ... washers, c-clips,
needles of course etc .. depending on what kit you purchase. If you
want to see the actual contents of a Dynojet stage 1 or 7 kit .. they
are on my web page ... there is a link off of the "list" website
......

IMHO ......
