I started my '97 max up today, after a relatively long period of
sitting. I thought I might adjust the idle mixtures as it's been a while,
so I started to fiddle with each carb. I discovered that both carbs on the
RH side (#3 and 4) contribute very little to the idle speed. I remembered
about blowing the air jet passageways out with compressed air, so I took off
the air box, removed and inspected PAJ 1 and 2 from each carb, removed the
idle mixture screws, removed the needle, spring and diapragm assy, and blew
out the passageways with both compressed air and carb cleaner. I
reassembled each carb, set the idle mixture screws to 2.5 turns. I ran the
engine until warm, and then reinspected the idle quality. At idle I can
pull the plug wire off of either 3 or 4 and the idle is barely affected, yet
if I pull a wire off of either 1 or 2 the idle is dramatically affected.
Further information: if I turn the idle mixture screws in on #1 and 2 the
idle drops to below 500 rpm, yet if I have 1 and 2 set normally and turn 3
and 4 all the way in, the idle will only drop to about 800 rpm. Off idle
appears to be fine and it appears to have plenty of power. It feels like it
has good spark, so I don't suspect a dead miss (although I have not done a
compression test yet).
I have the following mods done to the bike: Supertrapp slip ons (with 12
discs per side), needles shimmed .020", K + N filter.
If this is a problem relating to tuning this combination then I won't
put any time into it as I have a Hindle 4-2-1 and Dynojet Stage 1 kit on
order. I can't help but feel that old fuel has plugged passageways on those
2 carbs (even though I used a stabilizer before putting it away this last
winter), or that this is something that I won't be able too beat even with
the jet kit.
Any opinions or advice is welcome.
Don Seel.
