Check the steering stem again I'll bet that you will find that the dome nut on the top of the stem is not clamping down on the top yoke because the lock nut under the yoke has been tightened too much, maybe the rubber washer has been moved or removed. You need to fit a spacer when you do the Furber fix because the dome nut will lock up on the stem rather than the yoke. We are talking about a very small amount of movement here and you really can't detect it under static conditions. I know I didn't and the banging from the front end scared the <rude word> out of me on my test ride after having reassembled the front end for the first time.

has developed a metal to metal "clacking" noise which can also be felt through the handlebars. I have checked the entire front of the bike and  can't find the source of the noise, nor will any amount of lifting and bouncing of the front end duplicate the problem
