I've been following the discussion about installing a tach on VMaxes and
experimented on my 2000 VMax. I tried an Auto Meter tach that was set to 4
cyl mode and it reads 1/2 the correct rpms. I then connected diodes between
different cylinders and got the same results as others got: the tach always
reads 0 rpms. I just received a VDO model 333902 from Summit Racing this
evening and set it to 2 cyl mode and connected it in to the stock tach's
wiring and it works just fine.
There's a picture of the installation on my VMax web page at :
http://hometown.aol.com/rodneyj123/VMaxPage.html
The picture shows the engine revved to 4500 and both tachs agree.
This VDO tach cost $47 from Summit (plus tax and handling).
Maybe the diodes work on older models with different ignitions but they sure
don't work on the new VMaxes. I think the secret is to just get a tach that
works on a 2 cyl engine.
