Kraig,
Yes ... check you plugs etc .. IMHO however, I think you will find
somebody who is very white. On steady throttle at 3500-4500 you are
still running on your pilot circuits and just reaching the point where
you should be trying to open the slides, (entering "real" midrange).

As you point out .. when you twist the throttle and accelerate the
popping stops ... this is because you are forcing the slides to open
and adding a little fuel. I think you are running "lean" on your pilot
circuit/s and this is causing the "popping" back through the
carburetors. I suspect the carb that you "tapped" to free the float
and/or fuel valve may still be plugged up a little and possibly the
others as well.

You should give these guys a blast of compressed air and see if this
doesn't resolve your problem. If you have had the pilot mixture screws
out before then remove them and put a blast of compressed air in the
vacated holes. If you have not ... then put compressed air at the
"big" jet at the top of the carb, (this is the primary pilot air jet),
or at the jet behind the slide rubber, (the secondary pilot air jet).
Blasting at the top is the easiest since you don't have to take
anything apart, (except the airbox lid), ... and if you do use
compressed there then make sure to cover the top of the carb with a
rag, (after you have positioned the nozzle), to prevent gas from being
spit all over the place.
