Dan,
            you might be looking in the right general area but maybe just 
off focus. if there is anything in the valve train that is looseing up(or 
tightening) and deluting the crispness of your response it will be the valve 
clearence adjustments themselves most likely.
            or it might not, some people check at about that milage and find 
them all in spec.
            i'd sure check them before i went to the bother of replacing the 
chains
