Thomas,
You are probably just fine ... I brought mine in today after a ride ..
as I have a battery that is only a few months old. After reading your
post .. I let it set a couple of hours and measured the idle voltage
.. it was still at 12.8 ... so I put the lights on until it pulled it
down to 12.5 and turned them back off. It took less than 45 seconds
for the battery to settle back up at 12.7 so it was clear that this
battery was fully charged. I started the engine and at idle I was
around 14.2 and revving the thing got me down to 13.8 ....... I
noticed I can stay in the low 14s if I do this right after taking the
thing off the trickle charger but that really isn't realistic. As
usual .. .if I turn the headlamp on along with the brakes at idle I
can slowly pull the battery down to the low 13s and if you keep at it
long enough you can get into the 12s .......... turning them back off
allows it to slowly work its self back up. I try to keep the thing on
the little float charger these days and when the battery finally
starts to have a hard time turning over a hot engine then I just
replace it. The only other thing I can positively recommend for a new
battery is to do the initial "slow" charge and let it float up into
the high 15s or even low 16s ...... (this initial charge routine is
detailed at the Yuasa site and similar material is available at the
MCN site) ... it does seem to be of some value. Otherwise .. these
voltages unless extremely out of range only reflect the load the
battery is placing on the charging system .. and I have since
convinced myself that you can fully charge a battery with a
insufficient capacity as easily as you can charge one with
extraordinary capacity. I just keep them on the floater, keep water in
them and toss them when they won't crank a hot engine anymore .....
