Well I have an 85' vmax and it is really old in some spots. One of the
trouble areas was the master cylinders (clutch&brake). So Bryan had
mentioned how he polished the caps so that they have a mirror finish
(close). Basically you take a flat file and you grind the letters off
except the Yamaha in the middle. You want to make sure that you keep the
file level across the top as it will make it easier to polish up. Then
you take a 300 grit paper. and you polish the scratches out careful to
go in one direction. Then you take 600 grit and you go 90 degrees in the
other direction and that will take out the 300 grit scratches. Then you
take 900 grit and 90 degrees from the 600 grit you polish out those
scratches. Finally you finish with 1200 grit and polish out the 900 grit
at 90 degrees again. You can run some polishing cream over it and then
its done. Takes a few hours but the finished product is worth it. Less
maintenance to clean up in the future. Dale Walker used to sell polished
caps for $$ but this is cheaper.
