Mike,
If I really wanted a higher "effective" drive ratio ... I suppose a
larger diameter tire has to be easier than the rear end, (without
regard to inertia etc) .. since the wheel/tire has to come off the
bike before you can remove the differential. The only differential
options that I am aware of are the stock US 9/33 or the 10/33 ring and
pinion differential used in Ventures, Royal Stars, Japanese and some
Euro models. Of course .. a larger diameter tire or a taller rear end
is going to impact performance right off the starting line.

Patrick Kuyper of the Vmax Club in Holland recently completed
installing and testing a Royal Star 5th gear set ... (see the list
archives for his report and comments in regard to this modification).
It also appears that the second generation Venture 5th gear set should
work too and are not quite as tall as those from the Royal. This
modification of course has no effect on starting line performance.

Any of these modifications have their own advantages and
dis-advantages and the value of each is going to depend entirely on
the intended use of the vehicle as well as the operator's
expectations, (which simply translates to .. "be careful what you ask
for"...).

I personally would have a problem giving up "any" stoplight
performance ... this is a Vmax and "that" is what "I" bought it for
... I have a couple of other scoots that are less impressive in this
regard but have a cruising range that far exceeds the capability of
the Max. That first 1/8 mile .. before the first bend in the road at
triple digit speeds is the Vmax's area of expertise .. this is a real
good operating range to be "really good" at ... and the Vmax certainly
is ....
