I have considered simply a larger tire but given the V-max resistance to
turning I didn't want to add more gyroscopic action to the rear by adding
mass to the tire. It may be negligible but I'd have to weigh/measure the
tires before the swap.

The 5th gear mod sounds like what I might be after. Agreed, I want the bike
to keep its launch/acceleration character but would like it to be a little
less buzzy at highway speeds.

I haven't disassembled the transfer case (output shaft to driveshaft) on a
V-max but if someone can adapt a belt drive to it then I can design a dual
range to improve its highway manners. An overdrive is what I suppose I am
really looking for...

Mike,
If I really wanted a higher "effective" drive ratio ... I suppose a
larger diameter tire has to be easier than the rear end, (without

Patrick Kuyper of the Vmax Club in Holland recently completed

It also appears that the second generation Venture 5th gear set should
work too and are not quite as tall as those from the Royal. This
modification of course has no effect on starting line performance.
