Sam,
If you look at the advance curve in the manual ... it keeps going up
.. with the RPM ... and if you fudge the vacuum advance voltage to the
ignitor you can "get it all", (the "built in" plus the "vacuum add on"
... the top line on the chart), but this gets over 40 degrees at 9K
.... so I simply cut the vacuum voltage spoofing in half ... with the
10% resistor setup .. I was getting it "all" ... all the time ... this
way I "should" be halfway between the "fixed" and "vacuum" plot lines
on the chart and much closer to 35 degrees at the top minimum ... Of
course if you ever decide to back off the throttle a little, (it could
happen !!), and build a little "real" vacuum then you do "get it all",
(which I hope will pay off with improved fuel economy).
Yes .. the 157.5 Mikuni you are using is only a "little" step below a
DJ170, (hole size wise). To put things in perspective ... I had gotten
myself all the way down to a DJ150 in the PAJ2 so I went ahead and put
larger pilot fuel jets in the carbs, (42.5). I think that unless you
have really taken the "knife" to the airbox that even a 40 would have
done fine. To say it was a significant change would be an
understatement ... I might have had "that" kind of low end when the
bike was new and everything was stock but I don't think so ........
This throws everything rich of course ... You know that "report" you
get from the exhaust when you start to get a little heavy on the
mid-range ?? (Hey !! my exhaust is getting louder .. cool ..... sigh
.... not cool ... as the chrome starts to smolder ...) ....... well I
was getting this at idle ... it was like having "Christine", (the
killer Chrysler), in the garage. Sooooooo ... the mixture screws went
in "alot" and the PAJ2s had to be made larger.
Things are looking good ... I am still watching and trying to sneak up
a little higher on the PAJ2 to get some of my gas economy back. My
real goal was to get the same tune back I had before but with a larger
pilot fuel jet ... I could make the original arrangement run fine but
it would not last ... as it gets warmer here my pilots always seem to
go on vacation with increasing frequency and resulting in a little
leaner running at modest cruising speeds than I care for. I am hoping
this will stick with minimum attention, (no bi-monthly air blasts
etc).
This is very strange from what I am used to though ... you cruise
along a 6-7K and it is like you are barely touching the throttle ...
and it is extremely strong off idle from stop lights etc with the
"big" clutch dump ... no worries about a sneeze or weakness there ...
It is nice for things to be getting scary again ..... The first time I
rode it like this I was shocked ... I made a couple of blasts to make
sure I wasn't dreaming ... pinched myself and tried another launch ...
then I stopped the bike ... walked around it a couple of times ... and
sat down on the curb ... smiling at every car that drove by .... they
must have though I was crazy.
