Curiosity got the best of me so I took a look at the microfiche and saw
that there is a washer plate between the spring and the outside filter
element grommet. On my last oil/filter change, I don't recall there
being a washer plate there. Perhaps this is what caused the spring to
force the outside grommet into the filter. I'm half tempted to take the
filter off tonight to see for sure. It's only a $1.23 part and I could
see how the spring alone could force the grommet in.
Chris, check to see if you have that washer plate.
