Flatside question

Ok, I have managed to confuse myself. Which way do my needles go to make
the carb run leaner/richer. I don't understand what that hole that the
needles are sitting in does. Let more fuel in or air ? Someone enlighten
me please.

Thanks Phil ( I adjusted them yesterday one notch and now the exhaust is
backfiring a bit. popping sound)
