I don't (usually) like to talk about the problems at work, but this
story about cheaper filters is getting to be such a non sense, that here
it goes, (you can use your "Delete" button anytime guys, feel free!!)
We have certain new technology machines at work called FORMAX. These
machines produce a wide variety of specialized bolts, but mainly
connecting rod bolts for CAT, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Navistar and
others, (we are talking about BIG rods here).
These machines produce around 10,000 to 15,000 pieces per hour,
(depending on the speed they're set up to) so actually, they're faster
than the regular Hi-Speed Progressive Headers from the past, and able to
work with closer tolerances.
The Company hired a new group of engineers (3) for the new production
and development plan, to increase production an decrease unnecessary
spending.
Well, what do you know!!, the first cut these guys proposed, was in the
quality of oil filters used by these machines, and the grade of oil
used.... Fortunately the oil remained the same quality, but this one
engineer was convinced we were spending too much money on filters and
replacing them too often...(?) (the manufacturer gives you a specific
guideline, based on hours of use and oil pressure to replace the
filters!!!) well, seems he KNEW better than the manufacturer, so he had
the Board of Directors, approve his plan..........(boards of Directors
approve anything to cut expenses, so don't matter what Foremen, Leadmen
or operators had to say, the engineer got his way)
The moral of the story is: now, we have 2 FORMAX machines ready to be
rebuilt at a cost of $125,000 a piece, work had to be re-tooled and
re-scheduled to be run on other machines, because the customers need the
parts these machines were producing, and they're on our asses "big time"
(remember we're the #1 "Gold Plaque Award" supplier)
Oh! I almost forgot.. the engineer who made the suggestion, is flipping
hamburgers at "Wendy's", but, Hey!! for the first week of run with the
new filters, HE SAVED $ 2,300 FOR THE COMPANY!!!!!!
