Gary,
IMHO ... you are correct ...... that you are running richer but not
necessarily too rich, (getting close though if you are hearing it).
When you richen the mixture you will get a louder exhaust report and
the canisters will get hotter. Of course if you start getting too rich
then you will be burning even more of that excess fuel in the exhaust
and it will get very hot .. start sooting badly etc. You won't
outright damage anything running too rich .. except you will start to
carbon excessively and that will ultimately build up on valves and the
piston tops. You will also do a "color" job on your pipes. Too much
needle will ultimately result in the big "bog" when getting on the
throttle ...... Too rich on the main will hurt the top end on your
dyno runs. Just watch your plugs ... back off a little if they are
starting to get too dark or staying wet ........ I always try to get
just a little on the rich side for light throttle cruising as it seems
smoother and gets rid of that 3K vibration ...... of course you pay
for that in fuel economy.
