"I am in a position to pick up a used lower end from a 1200 Venture. Does
anyone know if it uses the same crankshaft as a Vmax?"
Vern, it may depend on what year Venture you'd be getting the crankshaft
from -- tho the difference wouldn't affect the fit (they all interchange
physically). According to the parts fiche I have, there was a change in the
crankshaft part number sometime after 1983 (first 1200 Venture) but before
1985 (first VMax). The original PN for the Venture is 26H-11400-00, it was
modified to 26H-11400-01 (I don't know when -- or why). With the arrival of
the VMax the part number was 1FK-11400-00, which became the part used in all
Ventures and VMaxes (thru the '88 VMax and '91 Venture, which is the extent
of my fiche library) and for replacement of the earlier Venture 1200
crankshafts.
I've seen the reference to an improved hardnening process on VMax cranks
mentioned by Al Hasapis before. If that was the reason for the new PNs you
might want to determine if the engine you're getting came with the stronger
crankshaft. (I don't know how you'd do that either, I guess you'd need
access to someone with '84 and '85 Venture microfiche.) This would be
especially true if you're planning to use a lot of boost with the
supercharger and race the bike. (I'll spare us all the sanctimonious lecture
on pennywise, blah blah blah.)
As for the early Venture camshafts being suitable for a blown engine; they
have less lift than the VMax cams and I would assume less duration. Is that
what you need for a supercharger?
