I had the same problem. I just put a no maintenance YUASA YIX50L-BS 300cca
in there with a little modification to the box.

Thanks

Subject: Replacement battery and stator coil

My '85 V Max has been very hard to start when hot lately and I've been
looking for a stronger battery or even replacing the starter with one
the four pole models. After following the discussion of the increased
cranking power of the maintenance free gel batteries for the Honda
Goldwing I bought a battery holder for an XS11 and headed for the
battery store. I explained the situation to the crew they there and
they suggested a sealed, 17 amp, no-maintenance battery from Panasonic
that fits in the Max with no modifications and cost $55. They said that
the Honda Goldwing battery sells for almost $100 and is a fine battery
but the Panasonic would be a big improvement over the stock battery and
half the cost of the gel battery. The stock number is ABC12V17. The
terminals are more to the center and not at the ends of the battery but
my stock cables fit fine with a little rerouting. This battery
vigorously cranks my Max into life at any temperature and seems to be a
good replacement with no modifications necessary.
Unfortunately I didn't check to see what made my battery so weak in the
first place and it turns out that the stator coil is not putting out any
juice. Vanotti Motors (.com) will sell me a new stator for $200, almost
$75 less than my local dealership. Has anyone on the list replaced this
item in their V Max? I have the shop manual but other than a trouble
shooting page on how to check its output I've found no mention of how to
go about replacing it.
Where is it? Will I need to buy new gaskets? Drain the oil? Get a clue?
Thank you for any suggestions.
