Vic,
No ... actually I wouldn't expect to hardly ever see a problem with
the enrichment valves failing to close ... usually that happens
because the diaphragms on the valves get torn and that is rare unless
someone has been disturbing them or they get dry rotted.

The usual problem with these valves is that they stick "closed" and
don't open back up until they get good and ready which results in a
bout of one cylinder running extremely rich for a little while ...
blowing a little smoke .. and then popping back open and causing the
symptom to disappear, (this can be fixed by simply taking them out and
cleaning them or shooting some carb cleaner in the PAJ2 hole behind
the slide rubber).

At any rate .. IMHO ... the "explosion" on deaccel is caused by the
pilot mixture being too lean ..... If the problem is in the carb or
somewhere in front of the engine, (spigot rubber etc), it may show on
the plug for the affected cylinder, (1/2 white etc) ... Otherwise you
need to take a really good look for an exhaust leak ......... or ..
more likely .........

The carb sync is a very good possibility ... if it was an "inept" sync
and you have a cylinder still pretty open with the others closed,
(throttle plate), it could create these symptoms. If you have never
"touched" anything then most likely .... you may simply be going
slightly lean on the pilot mixture and this is just the first sign
........ You may benefit equally as well as "Simon" and his "light
throttle" cruising stumble by simply cleaning the pilot circuits with
air .. carb cleaner or both ..........
