I believe that Vmax came from physics short-hand. Vmax (with the max in
subscript) would refer to maximum velocity.

Similar to:
Vi = initial velocity
Vf = final velocity
Vmin = minimum velocity

etc.

               don't know if the Yomama engineers know about that switch but
it sounds VERY GOOD to me. my a## was saved more than once by some HARD
