Not sure if anyone's ever tried a Venture tranny in a VMax --but it would
drop right in and operate perfectly. I've gone the other way and used VMax
2nd/5th gearset in a Venture and had no troubles. There are differences in
some of the gear ratios: VMax 1st 2.529:1; 2nd 1.772:1; 3rd 1.347:1; 4th
1.076:1; and 5th 0.928:1. Venture 1st 2.600:1; 2nd 1.772:1; 3rd 1.347:1;
4th 1.068:1; 5th 0.906:1. and the VMax gears may be designed for a little
more abuse (undercut dogs for one thing) but I'm not certain of that. One
thing -- be sure to get a transmission from a late '85 or '86 or later
Venture; the early ones had problems with the 2nd gear (as did the earliest
VMaxes). The benefits? It might be cheaper to get a Venture trans. There
were a lot more of them made. The drawbacks? Unless your bike has lots of
miles on it, it may be cheaper and better to just replace the parts that are
worn/broken. You could make the decision after you get your motor apart.
Or, you could find a whole used VMax transmission...
