Second Gear is a little weak. I recently rebuilt and undercut my 85 trans.
The updated engagement dogs are completely different. The updated gear
cluster is 5 gears. It did take a lot of severe abuse to blow it. Speed
shifting, electric shifting, numerous passes, burn outs, most always shifting
at red line, many missed shifts. Do not put a DW electric shifter on a 85
V-max. You must split the cases to fix a trans, it is a big job. Overall I
think the 85 will make a little more HP out of the box although it has the
analog ignition. I always wanted the 85. Good Luck, Paul VMOA 1141
