Eric,
I wouldn't worry about the pitch 99% of the time .. these are metric
fasteners ... I guess to appreciate the situation it would be easier
to see how many different pitches you can buy from Mc-Master Carr or
somewhere like that, (Emco excluded), for a particular diameter metric
fastener, (the answer is one). They have standard pitch charts for
metrics .. ie: a 4mm is .7, a 5mm is .8 etc ... It is not like buying
a 3/8 inch bolt with 16 or 24 pitch threads .. both equally common. I
only currently know of two places on the bike where the standard pitch
is not used ... one is the 5mm hex on the exhaust shroud I mentioned
earlier and the other is on the mixture screw, (which isn't a fastener
anyhow). There might be more hiding but I haven't found them yet.
18-8 or 316 stainless and 10.9 steel are most commonly available in
the sizes we would generally use .. and even the least expensive 10.9
offers strength comparable to grade 8. You can get titanium,
polypropylene, nylon, aluminum ... etc .. pick the grade and material
you want for the application. The part number relationship to length
and diameter is simply what it is ....... Last year I replaced "every"
fastener on my carb stack, all the carbs, brackets, inside the fuel
bowls .. etc ... I used the microfiche to order every fastener and
every fastener I received fit perfectly. This can be a useful tool or
interesting information ... I just thought I would pass it on to
anyone who might not have been aware of it.
