Dave, did the same thing you did, a real good inspection when I took the
cover off and saw nothing.  The starter clutch rides inside the large gear
that is behind your flywheel.  As soon as I pulled the wheel it was VERY
evident what my problem was.....................sorry you have to pull the
wheel.
