Can anyone shed some light on my charging system problem?
I went to start my 1990 V-Max and the battery wouldn't turn the engine over.
I followed the troubleshooting guide in my service manual and found the
stator coils and rectifier to be in specification. The charging voltage
doesn't fall in the 14vdc - 15vdc range. Here are my observations:
1) Charge voltage is about 13 vdc at idle and drops a little under 12 vdc
when the engine revs over 2000 rpm's.
2) Charge voltage is a little over 14 vdc with the headlight unplugged but
again drops to about 12 vdc when the engine exceeds 2000 rpm's.
3) Generator voltage at each stator before the rectifier/regulator is about
13 vac and drops again at over 2000 rpm's.
What would cause the charging voltage to drop as the rpm's go up. I would
suspect the regulator except for my measurements at the stator coils.
Suggestions anyone?
