Hey Phil,
I've been thinking about your charging woes (and that weird kill switch
behavior). The only thing I can think of that's common to the two is the
main ground strap, which goes from the battery to the engine block near the
oil fill opening. It might be useful to clean the heck out of the strap, the
bolt which holds it on, and the block where it bolts on, with a wire brush
or sandpaper or steel wool. Get all of the above nice and shiny before you
hook them back up.
Also, as I recall you've got a Hindle without a heat shield from the rear
bank. Have you taken the battery out and checked fluid levels lately? You
might be boiling your battery from the outside with heat from the back
pipes. I recall somebody else who had melting problems from the Hindle rear
bank, and you might be having a battery problem from the same source. Maybe
creating some sort of heat shield would help.
