Jeez Don, time to cut down on the caffeine.
I've never noticed the abrupt transition problem with the Super Venoms that
you complain of, but my bike, as a stock max is suspension limited more than
tire limited. I had the Metzeler on my back wheel only briefly, and I need
to look back over the records to see if it was in fact the 880, but my
experience with the tire wasn't as positive as yours. (I haven't said
anything on the Metzeler/Avon discussion recently, allowing for the
possibility that it wasn't the 880 I had on my bike.) It's been a while ago,
but the Metzeler I had on the bike was certainly not a more rounded profile
than the Super Venom. How long ago did you switch to a 17" rear? When is the
last time you drifted a STANDARD rear tire through a turn? Living in
Colorado, most of the cornering I do is relatively low speed sharp corners
rather than high speed sweepers, although there's a fairly good number of
higher speed corners on the Peak to Peak. Given the incidence of gravel and
uneven pavement on the roads, drifting is not a frequent occurrence. So
What? Have I drifted a bike through corners? Sure, lots. Do I do it as a
matter of course on the Max. Nope. Do most max riders? Is that the best
criterion for choosing a tire for the Max? Lighten up, amigo. We're your
friends here.
best,
Sat Tara
