Sounds like you started out with a bent shift fork which then took out your
dogs on the gears.
This same things happened to my 92 about 4 years ago. Fortunately I had an
extended warranty so my whole tranny was replaced (creative writing on the
part of the svc mgr.) Who is my friend.
