Looking for thoughts on a potential problem on my essentially stock '00 Max,
on which I have put on a little over 5000 miles since May.
I was sitting at a long light in neutral (the gear, not the town). Was
relaxing and letting my hands dangle down, kind of touching the rear base of
the fake tank & frame near the seat. I felt a thunk or mild clunk that
randomly repeated itself at intervals of between 3 - 5 seconds. There was
no audible indication to accompany the thunk I felt through the frame. I
do not feel anything through the bars, pegs, or seat.
Still needed to get home, so I proceeded and checked it again at the next
light. There was nothing at all !? Checked again at the next light (ya,
too darn many lights) and it was back again. I just took it on home at that
point.
Did a drain & strain of the oil and did not find any metal pieces. Cut up
filter revealed no clues. OK, new oil, new filter, new day. Had no
indicators of the thunk when cold, warm, or at normal operating temperature
initially. About 50 miles into the oil change, the same thunking came back,
same random pattern.
Could this be the loose bolts on the starter clutch? It's very random when
present and shows up intermittently. Thanks in advance for any clues on
this.
