Just got back from Jon Cornell's shop this past Friday. Got the 4-2 exhaust
w/ carbon fibre ovals. An absolute thing of beauty. I wanted to redo my
painted surfaces in this stuff as soon as I saw it. And god, does this
thing rumble! Sets off car alarms, scares small children, and drops jaws
everywhere I go. So I give it a 9.9 in the sound and looks departments.
(remembering there are no 10's) The VGAS is, well, what can I say... it's
VGAS. Brutal like a gangster, ostentatious like a pimp, it gets the dirty
work done, and draws a crowd in the process.
As for the power increase, I knew going in it had a tough competitor in the
Kerker 4-2-1/flatsides setup. I was hoping for record numbers but had to
settle for fifth place in the 120HP club. It dynoed at 131 w/ the 4-2
exhaust and a garden-variety stage 7 setup. Oddly enough, the VGAS only
added a couple more HP to that. I'm still trying to figure that one out.
I'm not done though, as I'm going to give it another go on the dyno now that
I'm closer to sea level. I'll post when I get something.
Making the adjustment from CV carbs to flatsides requires a little
attention. No more whacking the throttle. The flatsides require a more
tempered throttle hand. Another habit to unlearn.
The final numbers in Cleveland were 133.4@8200rpm and 90lb/ft@6400rpm. That
was up from the original stock 108.4@8200rpm and 88lb/ft@6000 rpm. Seat of
the pants is a different matter. It widened up the powerband and put the
torque right where I can use it. Jon was pushing me initially toward a
Kerker and it's proven good numbers, but the symetric look was more
important to me than the extra 5 or 6 HP. I'm happy with the 4-2. I got a
great looker with a kick-ass sound and picked up 25 HP in the process.
AND... I got to keep my centerstand.
Next time around I'll dig into the engine find a little more displacement.
A turbo would be nice, if there were a decent one for the Max. I got to see
one of Terry Kiser's Turbo setups on a 'Busa while at Jon's. He dyno'ed it
at 223.7 HP with several more ponies just waiting on tap. The 'Busa makes
this s*** look easy. Oh well, that's another topic for another list.
Meanwhile, I'll send this dyno sheet off to Terry, and try to get dry and
warm before calling it a night.
C-ya!
