My opinion since I never tried, but logical thinking is obvious. There is no
comparison between both options. When you leave the V-boost fully open on a
standard Max what you get as a result is very poor performance specifically
under the 6000 rpm, rough idling and basically wrong carburetion due to air
to fuel mixture, low velocity intake ending up in a bad mixture entering the
combustion chamber and so on. As you reach the 6000 rpm the engine now
starts getting the right mixture, proper intake velocity and there she goes.
So you get nothing good and what is most important in our muscle bike, no
bottom end guts. (some might disagree for they feel a much higher punch when
reaching the right rpm, when the boost has to be open, but standing side by
side, a normal operating Max will be at the next set of traffic lights
waiting for you when you reach that punch.........)
Stage 7 is a totally redesigned carburetion kit that looks for more intake
both in air and in fuel, needs both open suction and open outlet (open
exhaust system). If well tuned and with proper accessories such as K&N
individual filters and 2" open cans or a totally new racing exhaust system,
then you can get 10 extra HP. The downside of this is that your bottom end
is once again sacrificed but in this case for the benefit of those extra
ponies at the top end. People with S7K normally keep changing settings and
try out different things, normally because they feel inside them that
something is missing from the original Max feeling as they pull away hard,
but don't get the response they once felt, so they have to look for higher
revs to feel the punch. (This kit can be removed and all original stuff put
back, but it is a hell of a job, since you even have to install back the
original pipes and filter and even the drilled slides can be recovered, what
happens is that once you got the train, you never want to get off...)
The original Max carburetion is a very carefully designed system that works
when in any rev. range, but if you want to get radical then the sky is the
limit.
I have a Stage 7 with K&N's and 2" open cans, and sometimes I do miss the
original QUIET bike with more than enough punch from the moment you say GO!,
but no turning back for I love the rumble and uneven idle, sounding more
like a twin, all heads turn as you pass by...Humm, nice feeling. By the way
I kept my servo motor and run with v-boost fully open, but I have a toggle
switch on the handle bars that I sometimes use while waiting at a traffic
stand still, then I regain the beautiful smoothness of my V-four, but the
same way a standard bike does not work with open v-boost, mine with a closed
one just likes idling, if I leave it closed as I accelerate, it behaves like
a scared lamb, NO GOOD!
Hope this helps.
