Cambell,

I thought the only benifit was that the gap didn't degrade as time went on,
because of the material used? We get bombarded with so much b.s. marketing
on everything, it's hard to know what the damn truth is! I put some
platitnums in a couple of my cars, just because the say they last 100k
miles. And by god, they're gonna last a 100k, if I gotta push'm there!

Subject: Spark Plug

Gary,
I recently put a set of platinum tipped NGKs in, (DPR8EVX-9). I always
wanted to try these as I had seen a couple of dynos where it was
implied that the "VX" plugs had been responsible for increased
mid-range torque etc .... I also wanted to fool with them and see how
they behaved with a wider gap, (the theory here being that the gap
should be increased to require the same firing voltage as needed to
fire a less conductive "regular" plug...). I never tried this
previously because I couldn't justify paying $28.80 for a set of four
spark plugs. Soooooooooo ... not too long ago I was in a bind for a
unique set of Mikuni jets and was embarrassed to have to place an
order for only four jets from Sudco so I had the guy throw in a box.
You know how they can be on the phone ... as yes Mr. Campbell ... I
have four Mikuni xx37 jets ... what else ?? ...... You mean you called
our 800 number and you only want four little jets ??? Then you have to
clear your throat and say ... ahhhhh ... on no ... of course not
....ah ... I was just looking for a part number here ..... ha !! ...
don't be silly ... throw in a box of your most expensive spark plugs
!! ... etc ...etc ...

I have to say ..... they are beautiful plugs compared to the regular
ones ..... I could just sit them on the table and look at them ....
After putting them in .... the bike seemed extra crisp and willing to
start promptly but I am not sure I would not have gotten a similar
result with the installation of a "new" plug of any type, (the ones
that were in there were veterans of my last extremely cruel jetting
experiments etc). I am not really sure that this perception isn't my
imagination either ... I didn't put them on a dyno or anything ... but
I haven't noticed any difference. I am hoping that for $28.80 that
these little suckers .. with their super small diameter and super
conductive electrode will allow little Max to maintain his super
smooth idle when I have to sit for long periods in bumper to bumper
traffic ... that they will be less sensitive to fuel and deposit
variations .... and possibly allow me to keep pulling to 10K when
dirty old "regular" plugs would have been giving horsepower away ...
but otherwise ... I can not personally tell any difference ....

I also feel confident that in situations where the most dependable
ignition performance is a necessity, (not-so-stockers), that these
plugs would have a better opportunity to demonstrate their
superiority. In my case however ... I really can't tell the
difference.
