I change my oil once a year! Now, living in a part of the country that gets
pretty cold during the winter, I really only ride it for half of the year.
For the other half, my Vmax is in storage in my garage - all the necessary
winter prep done, of course.

The oil manufacturer I use recommends 12000 to 18000 miles drain intervals,
and although I'm sure they feel confident with that recommendation, I choose
to be more conservative, changing my oil about every 3500 to 4500 miles.

I drain out the old oil right before I put my Vmax in storage, and replace it
obviously with new quarts of oil. When I bring it out in the spring, I just
fire it up and ride al summer and into the fall, usually only putting about
4000 miles on it a season.

Now, if I did ride more than, say, 4500 miles in one season, I'd probably
change it twice that season.

Also, the manufacturer said something about the oil getting better over time.
He said the oil releases chemicals (rust inhibitors?, etc.) that make the oil
better with age. Maybe that's why they recommend such long intervals.

They do say to change the oil filter every 5000 miles, though, just to
maintain the integrity of the oil filter.
