Wayne,
I get this Canada / US model swap mixed up all the time ... and I
remember going after a guy on Ebay that was trying to sell a bike with
single pot calipers, (actually duals), as a '93 model .... I think
this vaguely follows the "Canada" syndrome I was trying to describe.
While the Canadian '87 may have had all the color trim of a US '88 I
think I remember Terry Hayden telling me that the first large fork/4
pot calipers that showed up in Canada were Yellow, (smelling and
looking like US '94s). I don't know what this means ... if they
ignored the Dark Violet Cocktail, (purple US '93s or what). If you
ever saw that John Candy movie where the US invaded Canada you know
how devious those people can be. Tyler has explained this "year slide"
phenomena many times but I never really get it right myself ..... I
think what you have though would be equivalent to a US '92. You still
have the small diameter forks, single pot appearing, (dual actually),
front calipers etc ..... but with the late model ignition, (single
pickup coil). Actually the "newer" single pickup ignition appeared
even on US models around 89-90, (somewhere there but surely before
'91), but it was not mentioned in the service manual until the "E/EC"
supplement appeared in '93, (I guess they figured it wasn't that big a
deal to warrant it's own supplement ... so we didn't see any manual
changes between '88 and '93). This should be more than enough to
trigger border tensions ....especially with the election on the rocks
but possibly those with a more accurate memory will bring us up to
date on this issue ... (and I will save the post this time).

OK ... just prior to posting ... I ran a search through all my old
archives and found Tyler's last "story" in regard to Canadian models,
(the ones with the "strange" speedometers ;>) .....

... your close the 87 model is Canada only. it's the first year for
the black scoops and new style wheels front and back. the 86 only had
the new back wheel. your 88 the same as our 88(it's not a US model).
up to 89 the bikes are the same except for jetting for emissions. from
90 and up things change.Canada did not get a 90,91,and 92 models. it
was reintroduced mid 92 as a black model(early release 93. our 94 is
purple,95 is yellow,96 is orange(FireRed), 97 silver..... as you
can see from the pattern the 90's in Canada are 1 year behind in
colors for the max. also as of 98 there are no more Canadian spec
bikes, they are all(models) 49 state US spec bikes. I hope this
now clears up the confusion about models and years.
