Jay,
Yes ... the brown/gold tint is normal with the stainless pipes ... It
slowly turns ... but will polish right back up. Many people like the
appearance of the tint and leave it that way. I agree with your
assessment that the poor running bike you described is running too
lean. This would never be the result of a pipe change ... it sounds
more like a bike with the "Y" removed or other intake modification
that has not had the needles adjusted. In extreme cases you would not
be able to make it to 6K ... as it would just gag and spit as you got
into slide territory ... 4K+ .... This would not however prevent
vboost from kicking in ... since it only depends on RPM to make an
appearance ... if you can make it to 6K it should be opening, (starts
around 5.7K and is finished just about 8K). Of course if the bike was
running that bad you may have not noticed it.
IMHO as always ....
