My V-Max is making what sounds like a weak hydraulic lifter noise when I
start her up cold. It slowly subsides as it get's warmer until only an
ear that worries can hear it. Of course my V-Max doesn't have hydraulic
lifters which raises the question 'what is it?'. On the VMOA list Mike
Sayers suggested I look to the starter drum screws being loose. This
could be a possibility. Another response relayed a loose wrist pin
experience as rattling around 3000 rpm. This is not happening. I was
thinking the reason it quieted down was as the piston got warmer it took
up the clearence causing the noise. My personal experience with some car
motors is the rattle get's worse as the motor heats up and you do hear
it more around 3000rpm. I'm mechanical but not a mechanic. How about a
camshaft journal (?)that is worn? My reasoning is that the camshaft is
rattling until it gets the oil up into the head. Incidently the bike
runs perfect, it has 46k on the odometer. If it is the camshaft and the
journals I do have an extra set of low mileage heads with cams from a
motor that was destroyed when a rod cap came loose on it. Help!!!
