Patrick,
I know how distressing it can be to find a noise like this. As you
know .. you can conjure up some ungodly noises that sound like the
engine is coming apart if you have a cylinder drop out at idle, (ie
... out of sync or plugged pilot etc). A noise that starts banging
loudly at startup and disappears quickly, (with the oil circulation or
pressure coming up), is likely to be a bearing. I had a rod bearing
with excessive clearance one time and it behaved exactly like this. An
exhaust leak will subside as the temp comes up ... (it is cooler now
... so something like this could be making itself more apparent than
it would have during the summer). I have had that too and swore it was
a lifter.
It is also important to remember that camshafts turn at 1/2 the speed
of the crankshaft so the cadence of the noise might help identify it
or at least eliminate it as a possibility. I also, (embarrassed to
say), recently picked up a noise for a day that really had me worried
... it sounded like a rod for sure and was persistent at lower rpms
until the engine got completely up to temp, (there was also a really
strange low volume high pitch squeal that occurred only at 3K .. and
could only be noticed if the bike was in the garage and this had me
worried that I might have a gasket leak). I had all the plugs out
checking on some recent adjustments and threaded them all back in hand
tight with the socket extension. I usually then come back and torque
all the plugs down. Welllllllllll ... I apparently, (apparently crap
.. I was the only one working on it), did not torque #2 ... and this
strange "rod like" noise was from the loose spark plug. Didn't matter
... the bike then went to the emissions station and passed with flying
colors .... when I got home however I went to pull the plugs again to
start checking, (listen in the bore holes with the plugs out while
cranking), and discovered the plug that broke loose by hand ....... It
is difficult to identify where some of these noises are coming from
for sure ...
IMHO as always ....
