In my case, I dropped my bike off at Jon's shop and picked it up a few
months later, with the VGAS, Galfer SS lines, and new UFO exhaust installed.
Most of that wait was because he was still in the process of developing the
exhaust. He normally requires about a week or so to install and dynotune
the VGAS. If you prefer to do it yourself, you could probably have it
changed out in a day or so if you had no interruptions, then run it to a
dyno & have it tuned.
The hardest part would be getting the stock carbs, linkage, cables, etc.,
removed. Jon has re-racked the carbs and gone to some effort to see that
installing VGAS is as painless as possible. Once you get the Keihins
installed you have *lots* of room to work in. Doing jet changes, needle
changes, etc. are a piece of cake. The flatslides are a different beast
than the stock CV's. For one thing, they are not as low-maintenance.
Getting them tuned "just right" requires more patience and effort. The
payoff comes when you get them to that sweet spot. Fortunately, Jon will
stick with you till you reach that. He has been like a consiglieri for my
bike.
My bike had 4" stacks, .145 mains, and .60 pilots when it left the shop.
Since then, I've dropped the stacks to 2" (looks more natural on the Vmax)
and changed the pilots to .52 and the mains to .138. Jon has been right
there, sending whatever was necessary. Unlike many merchants I've dealt
with, he really sticks with you after the sale, dispensing advice and
pointers in generous doses. When I decided that I wanted 2" stacks instead
of 4", he sent them, no questions asked. My throttle response is now
*greatly* improved, and I love the sound of those Keihins as they go from
"clack-clack-clacking" at idle to greedily sucking air and fuel as I nudge
the throttle. I would make the same descision in a heartbeat. I'll be
having them dynotuned again soon, so I'll be posting new dyno sheets. Vern
Hathaway is going to introduce me to a race tuner who has a dyno with
exhaust analyzer. :^D
As for whether or not they're right for you, only you can answer. It's
mainly a balance of low-maintenance and streetability vs. increased hp,
better throttle response, and head-turning looks.
