You didn't specify which v8 version you've used and which exact GCC version was involved, but things work fine for me with the current version (r24014) on Ubuntu 12.04 and GCC 4.8.3. Furthermore, quite a few people here are using Ubuntu Trusty, which comes with GCC 4.8.2 AFAIK, and there were no complaints so far.

Does a simple C++ program with '#include <string>' compile for you when you pass -m32 to GCC?
