This is a duplicate, can't find the original issue now, but someone else probably knows it. IIRC, the nested + or * cause this behavior, and it is worse when it doesn't have a match. It returns null because "..." isn't matched by your regexp, removing that from the test string makes it match and it does so in under 20us:

var t = process.hrtime(); "Hello there, best wishes, from Syria".match(/^((?:, |[\w ]+)+)$/); process.hrtime(t);
[ 0, 17104 ]
