Writing efficient regexp is part of programming. Using nested + and * can
and will cause expensive backtracking.
And yes, the regexp engine could be made to recognize patterns to simplify
badly written regexp, but then again we could also ask GCC to recognize
bubblesort and replace it with quicksort.
