Well Jason, personally, I like your plan.  As you've noted, it's a lot like what
I've been thinking of doing.  But I keep re-reading Bud Cooper's article:

For the area on each side where the frame enters, I'm thinking that I'll cut smaller sections in the shape of an "L".  These will fit just over where the frame enters and will need extra caulking since there may be a tiny gap there.  I don't know... haven't thought of anything better yet.  I wish I could find some type of rubber flashing that would work.  Thought of casting one out of latex--but that's a lot of trouble. 
Think that'll work?

What are you going to do with the flashing where the frame rails
extend out for the bumper?
