John,

The use of stabilizing jacks are purely optional. They are used to keep the trailer from "bouncing" when you walk around in the trailer. Some people love them, some hate them.

Most often people just use two at the rear of the trailer where the frame meets the bumper. A few people (myself included also use two at the front of the trailer on the A-frame where it meets the trailer body.

There are basically two types of stabilizers. One is removeable and the other gets mounted to the trailer frame. I prefer the removeable type since my trailer is low to the ground and the mounted type would drag every time I go in or out of my driveway.

Be sure to have some sort of block for the trailer wheels. Sometimes campsites are not level and you wouldn't want the trailer roll away from you!

Subject: [VAC] stabilizing jacks

Hello, again -

Another newbie question.  In reading about travelling with a travel trailer,
I read that one should use stabilizing jacks when setting up camp.  Here's my
question -- are they necessary?  If so, where does one put them, so as not to
damage the trailer? And, as there are different kinds, what type do folks
prefer?

Thanks,
John, who sometimes thinks it might have been easier to buy a new trailer!
