For realistic road grades, it's actually a bit more than
half. More precisely, multiply the % grade by 0.573. This works well for
grades up to about 10%. For example, a 10% grade is 5.71 degrees, not 5.73
degrees. Few people care about that kind of accuracy, and for rough
calculations, you can just estimate as I do - multiply the % grade by 0.6 -
and be close enough.
